Kpandbeia, Mariama

Preserve your identity but share your culture
Continue to show your identity anywhere you go
No matter what
Love your identity
But discover and celebrate other cultures

I am a young beautiful Sierra Leonean
I like the way I dress, I like my culture
I am a very happy child
And proud of my identity

In Sierra Leone our family dresses the same
Beautiful colorful clothes match when going to a party
There goes the Kpandebia family
Why are they wearing the same clothes?

Our babies are on our backs
They are wrapped in lapa
Peacefully they sleep as we slowly walk
As we work, as we play, as we eat
Why is Jerome on your back?

My sister and I share the same bed
We laugh, we cry, we fight, we comfort
We tell stories, we tell secrets
We sleep
Why do you sleep with your sister?

In my culture we cook every day
All the children eat together with their mothers
Why are they eating together?

We the girls take showers together with our friends
And our mothers
Why are they taking shower together?

Here, in America, people carry their babies in the front
In the car seat
They all dress differently
Everybody has their own bed
Isn’t that lonely?

Here, in America, people don’t usually cook
They eat at the restaurant
While the kitchen materials are at home waiting
Why can’t they cook at home?

We have a lot of questions about each other
Even though we have different cultures and unique identities
It doesn’t mean we can not communicate with each other
We can unite by loving, caring
Respecting, understanding
